Much with the old "system" must necessarily be dispensed with: the pressures of fear, punishment, totalitarian authority, ugly competition, and a resulting lack of learning, joy, and boundless lack of productivity. Replacing these "traditional" habits of non-learning with fresh new attitudes of caring for one another's qualities and skills, sharing and helping, and creating a sense of confidence and trust in ones own integrity and that of your fellows... and seeing and that great infinite benefits... this is exactly what we had arrived all capable to accomplish together.
Each individual is due to the experience of planning and doing plans picked by just about every member with the group, while using teacher's guidance and experience as being a resource of proper use. First, the agenda of varied skills is picked and decided, each contributing to and approving in our outline of the we would like to learn. We should also encourage and eager for flexibility and spontaneity in how we make valuable use in our time together. Issues show up... that require immediate attention. In addition, we would like to periodically evaluate how we have been all doing. What are our strengths? Where might we improve? This is necessarily a continuous process. Be as genuinely upbeat and encouraging as you possibly can. Once again... this learning experience transfers to each person's own life situation. Think of how this can and does benefit future and current family and community life. It works! The best critics and supporters... are students themselves.
It is really a beautiful experience, also from my perspective as both a teacher and student. Much affection is openly encouraged. Students are wanting to arrived at class. Boredom as well as the have to cheat fade from existence. Memorable moments are experienced. Students invited others to see: parents, employees, community mentors, siblings, and also visitor/participants from our "special class" which, in turn, invited our students to arrived at their room and share with them also. Their teacher was thrilled to sign up. A not-so-foreign exchange.
Perhaps our only problem: simply not plenty of time to fit everything in we had arrived wanting to accomplish. Hence... it became the individual's choice to still develop his/her own objectives beyond our limited class time. Many "projects" were done outside, therefore the outcome was shared while using group. Fantastic variety! One senior lad had initiated their own business by purchasing one porta-potty to become rented for farmworkers inside field (having few other such facility); he earned enough, eventually, to purchase another one, continuing to keep them adequately.
