Bureaucracy, hierarchical bullying, leaders and lowly followers, and any other type of governing in the expense and exploitation with the governed... these are hurtful and criminal systems for the benefit with the few along with the misery with the many. There are possible ways of living and together. I have proposed and exercised a significantly simpler, balanced, harmonious, and successful guideline for any good teacher and willing students to genuinely work and learn together.
Leadership and responsibility are shared equally, providing all individuals a bunch first understand how it works and second, are eager to enjoy its productivity and share joy of learning and together.
Much with the old "system" must necessarily be dispensed with: the pressures of fear, punishment, totalitarian authority, ugly competition, along with a resulting lack of learning, joy, and boundless lack of productivity. Replacing these "traditional" habits of non-learning with fresh new attitudes of taking care of one another's qualities and talents, sharing and helping, and making a feeling of confidence and trust in your integrity and that of your fellows... and seeing and exceptional infinite benefits... this is exactly what we had arrived all in a position to accomplish together.
Each individual is due to the experience with planning and undertaking plans picked by every single member with the group, while using teacher's guidance and experience as being a resource of excellent use. First, the agenda of assorted skills is picked and arranged, each leading to and approving individuals outline of what you want to learn. Thus... there exists a plan, a syllabus, from which to draw our way of life of curriculum and learning.
Next, we evaluate which form of leadership or management qualities are essential, to be able to accomplish real learning skills together. The literal qualities: subject preparation; understanding group dynamics; and making the perfect use individuals time together. Also... collecting our work material together, for daily use. The abstract qualities: various various ways; caring for the productivity of each one member with the group; using a well-earned pride within the advancement of each one individual; concern for individual and group behavior and harmony; experiencing and enjoying the vast various skills and experience which can be achieved; transferring the training skills and subject content beyond the First Grade Spelling Games Classroom, as life lessons.
What specific duties must each of us experience, to be able to make this daily venture a hit? To love who were and what were engaged in. Yes! This is the best of living, in and out with the classroom. Loving our work... and to like our everyday life.
We rotate leadership and management duties, once our agenda is available from which to draw for the daily lessons. Two students at a time... work cooperatively as co-teachers; they need to both prepare in advance so that they can be relied upon to help keep things moving smoothly. At the same time, the students want this pair to succeed: when the student teachers do well, so will the rest with the class. They help the other person to succeed... as a bunch effort.
We also rotate other First Grade Spelling Games Classroom management duties, i.e... the passing and collecting of materials; posting the daily agenda about the board; welcoming one's fellows upon arrival and leading to immediately getting down to business; becoming host to any and all visitors, and looking after interruptions quickly; taking attendance (to get checked with the teacher); going around and giving aid wherever necessary; keeping an easy journal/log individuals day's accomplishments, to get eventually used with the next set of student teachers in making their plans, keeping transition as smooth as possible.
We should also encourage willing and able for flexibility and spontaneity in the way we make valuable use individuals time together. Issues show up... which need immediate attention. In addition, you want to periodically evaluate how were all doing. What are our strengths? Where might we improve? This is necessarily a continuous process. Be as genuinely upbeat and encouraging as possible. Once again... this learning experience transfers to every person's own life situation. Think of how this could and does benefit future and current family and community life. It works! The best critics and supporters... are the students themselves.
It can be a beautiful experience, also from my standpoint as both an instructor and student. Much affection is openly encouraged. Students are eager to come to class. Boredom along with the need to cheat fade from existence. Memorable moments are experienced. Students invited others to visit: parents, workers, community mentors, siblings, and in addition visitor/participants from your "special class" which, therefore, invited our students to come to their room and present to them also. Their teacher was thrilled to sign up. A not-so-foreign exchange.
Perhaps our only problem: hardly lots of time to fit everything in we had arrived eager to accomplish. Hence... it became the individual's option to continue to develop his/her own objectives beyond our limited class time. Many "projects" were done outside, and therefore the outcome was shared while using group. Fantastic variety! One senior lad had initiated his own business by buying one porta-potty to get rented for farmworkers within the field (having hardly any other such facility); he earned enough, eventually, to invest in a different one, continuing to keep up them perfectly. An accomplishment for himself... among others. A young woman inside a junior class crocheted warm and attractive baby blankets to get first given and later on sold as lovely and useful items; I still use mine, several years later.
Life skills were a continuing, including curriculum lessons and making a lifelong joy and appreciation for learning, and living of the same quality a life as possible, plus owning an immediate and extended positive influence on others. Horizontal management... a blessing to all or any... along with a horizon without limit or boundaries.
