It is noisy available. The debate over the way we can improve the American education system has developed into a screaming match during the last several years. The focus continues to be on teacher- accountability and the way to manipulate the teacher as a way to raise Johnny's test score. I believe that people have missed the point. There continues to be much beating of chests and gnashing of teeth over the issue. Schools have closed, teachers fired, and all sorts of crazy programs applied to try to fix the problem. However, we have overlooked one essential player - Johnny himself.
In our quest for better schools, better curriculum, higher test scores, and much better graduation rates, we have overlooked the key component in the mix - a student. He has to have an overabundance of skin in the game. We teachers are very busy working ourselves to death, crunching numbers, and wringing our hands that people have forgotten one important fact. The student, not the teacher, takes quality and earns the score. We have definitely left Johnny off the hook in the last decade as we twist ourselves like contortionists to get quality scores up. It reminds me in the children's story "The Emperor's New Clothes." Just like the brave child who finally spoke up and said aloud that this Emperor is naked, we have to admit it is time for a student to pony-up in the accountability game.
We must re-focus our efforts on student accountability. That does not mean I take my job and my very own accountability lightly. It just ensures that with no full involvement and cooperation of a student, no one succeeds. As test scores are getting to be a lot more important, we have expected less of a student. Instead, we have blamed the teacher for poor student performance. Now we must focus a significant effort on helping that student take charge and take personal responsibility for his own education and ultimately his own future. It does not start in Washington D.C., or in the state department of education, or in the state legislature. It begins within the individual High School Us History Classroom Decorations. Every student gets the directly to feel comfortable and safe in the classroom setting, no matter ethnicity, ability, etc. This includes the stinkers along with the achievers. The teacher should have a well-thought-out behavior plan which is fair and equitable to any or all. My plan commences with telling my classes whatever they can get of me. It sometimes surprises them. I also let them know that if they see me slipping inside my job instead of holding up my end in the bargain, they're able to call me into it. That is a part of our mutual accountability to one another.

Respectful - we respect the other person and ourselves and you must do everything that people can to safeguard and promote the well-being of our community.
Once we establish this common ground, we can get through to the business of guiding our students to get in charge of their very own behavior, their very own education, and ultimately their very own lives.
